Dissociation

ABOUT DISSOCIATION

Dissociation is an association for all serving and former civilian and military members of DI. Those who are eligible are invited to apply for membership.

Introduction

The open area of this website introduces interested parties to the role and history of Defence Intelligence and its predecessors. Current and former staff are entitled to join Dissociation where academic, historic and pertinent individual contributions can be accessed. The members’ area gives details of the full range of our activities and access to the growing library of contributions on historical and professional topics. Both areas are dynamic and, in keeping with the tradition of Defence Intelligence, populated with material that informs and challenges established perceptions.

Social

  • We hold monthly informal socials, usually on the third Thursday of the month, at a Whitehall area hostelry. The Great British Beer Festival held yearly in Olympia has been a useful informal meeting opportunity. During Covid restrictions, meetings have been held online via Zoom.
  • We have visits to places of interest. These have included Bletchley Park, the Second World War Government Code & Cypher School, Bentley Priory and historical ‘Intelligence Walks’ around areas of London associated with intelligence. More are planned.
  • We are a forum for maintaining contact with former colleagues.
  • We provide a means for younger members to learn from the experience of those who have gone before them.

History

  • We are researching the history of DIS and its predecessors, with a view to eventual publication to take DI’s achievements to a wider audience.
  • We are recruiting specialist sub-groups to cover the DI story for the 50 years since 1964 and the earlier single-service and joint organisations, and members have contributed to official historical studies.
  • We aspire to capture corporate memory through an oral history project.

Organisation

  • The inaugural AGM in June 2014 agreed the constitution of Dissociation.
  • It elected a committee of current and former personnel which meets regularly.
  • The membership subscription is £10 a year (June – May). This modest charge covers bookings of meeting rooms and any minor administrative costs.
  • Anyone current or former member of DI wishing to join Dissociation, please send an email to: [email protected], stating years of service in DI. We will then respond with instructions on how to pay the membership fee.
  • Once your membership has been approved you will be given Member’s access to this site

Publications and Communication

  • The Dissociation Newsletter Disinformation is produced regularly and emailed to members.
  • A working group will monitor Wikipedia and seek to correct the many inaccuracies on DI and related pages, as a public benefit in the spirit of Wikipedia.
  • Dissociation has a website: One Di Connect. The member’s area is accessible via a login.

Security

  • As current and former DI staff, we will ensure that nothing puts our people and information at risk.
  • Occasionally arrangements may be made for members to have access to official premises to carry out historical work.
